BrainUP! for a Healthy Mind

Engagement in activities that promote a brain healthy lifestyle is particularly important since the human brain has plasticity, which refers to the brain’s ability to change at any age – for better or worse.  Brain function is shaped by environmental input and lifestyle. Fortunately there are actions we can all take to live a brain healthy lifestyle.

You can now learn about brain health and find tools and resources to inspire you, your family and friends to live a brain healthy lifestyle by visiting the BrainUp! website and signing up for regular updates via social media.  Made possible through a grant from the Winter Park Health Foundation (WPHF), BrainUP! was created to:

  • Promote public understanding of brain health
  • Raise awareness of how important it is to become brain healthy
  • Inspire people of all ages to engage in and commit to brain healthy lifestyles

The website outlines six  Brain Commandments — simple rules to help keep your brain active, healthy and growing strong regardless of your age.  Brain Champions feature local people and the stories of how they embody these commandments.  On the site you will also find the Brainifesto, a statement of commitment to take brain health seriously, plus a section with puzzles and activities designed to challenge your brain in fun ways.  Finally, you can learn more about how the brain works and the latest scientifically proven and timely information on brain research.

BrainUp! can also be found on Facebook.  Like BrainUp! on Facebook to receive regular news, tips and resources to help you and your family live a brain healthy lifestyle.

As part of its brain health campaign, the WPHF is co-sponsoring a community education event in partnership with the Rollins Center for Health Innovation and The Mayflower Retirement Community.  The lecture, scheduled for September 19, 2016, will feature John Ratey, MD, best-selling author and Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.  Stay connected to BrainUp! for event details including how to register.
