Start! Walking Day is a Big Success
More than 130 people participated in the April 8 Start! Walking Day event—a joint project of the American Heart Association (AHA), the Winter Park Health Foundation (WPHF), Winter Park Memorial Hospital (WPMH) and the Crosby Wellness Center and Winter Park YMCAs.
The April 8 event coincided with the AHA’s National Start! Walking Day, and was one of many walking rallies held around the country.
Designed to inspire people to get moving, the program drew local business people, residents, young people, moms with strollers and older adults as well.
Speakers included Ken Bradley, Mayor of the City of WP and Chief Administrator of WPMH; Jim Ferber—head of the Central Florida YMCA, and Patty Maddox, WPHF President and CEO. They led the group on a 15-minute walk.
Plans now call for marking the walk used for the event with permanent signs and then distributing maps of the walk to residents and employees throughout the area. It is hoped the program can be expanded throughout Winter Park, Maitland and Eatonville.
