Grants/Projects 2006
In the belief Healthy Kids Make Better Students and Better Students Make Healthy Communities, WPHF, partnering with Orange County Public Schools, established the Coordinated Youth Initiative (CYI). Modeled after the Coordinated School Heath Program promoted by the Centers for Disease Control, the initiative involves parents, teachers, counselors, school administrators and health care professionals in programs to insure the health of the whole child.
CHILL Counseling Program
CHILL, which stands for Community Help & Intervention in Life's Lessons, is a free in-school counseling program for all students attending Winter Park Consortium schools (Winter Park High School and its elementary and middle feeder schools).
School Nursing Initiative
WPHF funds enable Consortium schools to hire either Licensed Practical Nurses or Registered Nurses for school clinics providing immediate access to health care for children, especially those who may not have access to any other source.
Nurse Practitioners at Student Health Centers
Nurse Practitioners at Student Health Centers at Winter Park High School and Glenridge Middle School are financially supported by WPHF. The Nurse Practitioners have master's degrees and are able to provide more advanced care such as performing physicals and prescribing medicine.
Healthy School Teams
WPHF funds support activities of Healthy School Teams (HST) at each Consortium school. Each team, made up of teachers, school staff, parents and sometimes students, develops activities to improve the health and wellness of the individual school.
Pre-K Home Visits
This Foundation-supported program provides a unique opportunity for teachers to try to ensure that each child entering kindergarten is prepared for school and ready to learn. Teachers can get to know students before they enter school so they can help with the transition and they can let families know about the CYI program and services offered.
School Health/ CYI Program Evaluation
The Health Council of East Central Florida was enlisted by WPHF to perform an evaluation of the CYI programs during the 2005-2006 and 2006-2007 school years, and to recommend an evaluation framework for 2007-2008. The effort is designed to recognize progress that has been made, but also to look for areas where improvements are possible.
